The Australian weekend packing list

A good weekend kit is less about owning specialised gear and more about making heat, water, sand and a long drive feel uncomplicated.

Pack around the conditions

Australia’s bright days can still become cold evenings, and a short drive can become a very long one when traffic changes. Start with sun protection, a refillable water plan and a light insulating layer. Choose bags with a simple wipe-clean base if they will be near grass, beach paths or a wet boot.

Choose capacity honestly

For day trips, an easy-to-carry bag and a compact picnic layer are usually more useful than a huge tote. For an overnight drive, use packing cubes or separate pouches so chargers, medicine and wet gear do not migrate through the car. Check a cooler or power bank against its real use time, not only its largest claim.
